You’re sitting at home enjoying a quiet evening watching your favorite infomercial when you start hearing strange thumps and groans from your home’s ventilation system. Since there’s no smoke in the room, you decide it can wait until you learn how to be a millionaire in seven days. But in the back of your mind, you’re trying to decide if it’s something to worry about.

Houses make all sorts of noises. The older the house, the more noise you’re going to hear. HVAC systems are a big source of noise, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Hearing the quiet hum of the air conditioner on a hot summer day would be pretty refreshing. On the other hand, a loud clanking noise might cause a little anxiety.

So what sounds are normal and what sounds should you worry about when it comes to HVAC noise. Much of it is simply common sense, and being familiar with the different sounds your house makes.

When to relax

All HVAC systems are going to make some kind of noise. Even the quietest air conditioners and heaters on the market will still have a quiet hum to them. Additionally, you’ll also hear the air circulating through your ventilation system and coming out your vents.

Older HVAC systems, on the other hand, will probably be a bit noisier. As parts wear down and dirt begins to collect in the nooks and crannies of your equipment, there will be squeaks; maybe some quiet thumps or even a squeal or two. This is just part of your system getting older. If the noise doesn’t bother you, great! But you should still take these signs of aging as a reason to call an HVAC professional to come and take a look. At the very least you probably will need a good tune up. Though depending on your equipment’s age, you might need to start replacing stuff.

When to panic

Some noises, however, just can’t be ignored. If you’re hearing a loud thud every time your heater kicks on, there’s definitely something wrong. A constant rattling sound can also signal problems, like debris blowing around in the ductwork. Any loud grinding noise is always a cause for concern because it can be a problem with the motor or the fan belt.

When in doubt…

If you’re not sure a noise you’re hearing from your HVAC system is normal or not, call a HVAC professional to come take a look. You might just need a quick tune-up. But if there is a problem, it’s better to catch it early than let it fester and become a big problem later on.
