While cats and dogs can enrich our lives with their companionship, they can also make the air we breathe inside our homes a perfect recipe for allergies and other respiratory problems, like asthma. Our fury friends shed hair and dander, the two main causes of pet-related allergies. This is a minor annoyance to some, but can make life very uncomfortable for others – to the point where the only option is to live pet-free. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Below is a list of ways you can drastically reduce the amount of hair and dander in the air.

Change your air filter. It’s recommended that you change the air filter in your HVAC system a few times per year, depending on the season. If you have pets, you might want to change the filter more frequently to avoid pet hair build-up in the filter. This won’t completely eliminate allergens caused by pets, but it will greatly reduce them.

Upgrade your house’s ventilation system. If the air in your home doesn’t circulate as well as it should, then it can become stagnant, allowing for allergens to hang in the air longer. The air in your home should circulate throughout the house. The ventilation system should also have an exhaust fan to get rid of older air and a fresh air intake.

Buy a High Efficiency Particulate Air filter. Also known as a HEPA filters, these units are made to catch particles like pet dander. Dander is caused by particles in an animal’s saliva, urine and skin glands. When they dry up on dead skin, they get released into the air, and into your lungs. The problem with dander is it’s so small, it simply flies right through most household air filters. HEPA filters can catch dander and keep it out of the air.

The downside to HEPA filters is that they are expensive, and might need to be replaced, depending on usage.

Have your HVAC system inspected regularly. Routine inspection and maintenance for your home’s HVAC system will ensure it’s running efficiently. For example, if there are problems with the fan motor it might not be circulating the air in your home like it should. A professional HVAC technician will know how to keep your system running at its best.

Keep your house clean. Pet hair and dander not only float around in the air, but they also collect on the surfaces of our home. This includes: carpet, furniture, tables, windowsills and even bedding. Running the vacuum through your house every week and dusting other surfaces will get rid of a lot of these pet allergens.

You don’t have to live with pet allergies
