In the colder months, your furnace is often all that stands between you and the harsh weather. What you want is that welcome blast of heat that permeates every wall and bone. What you don’t want is the furnace to blow cool air, or no air at all!
Is your furnace underperforming or failing to heat your home? The experts at Bovio Rubino Service can help you troubleshoot!
What to Do When Your Furnace Generates No Heat
Let’s start with the simplest fixes and most commonplace problems:
- The thermostat is set incorrectly. Many times, we’ve had a technician assigned to a home only to find the thermostat was set to “cool” instead of “heat”, or that the settings got changed unknowingly. Before shelling out for a service, make sure your thermostat hasn’t been tampered with or bumped.
- The emergency switch is set to “off.” Did you know your furnace is equipped with a special switch so you can easily shut it off in case of an emergency? This often looks just like a normal light switch, and many homeowners accidentally turn it to the “off” position as a result. Make sure this switch is on. If it is, then move on to the next possible problem.
- If you use gas, the pilot may be unlit. The pilot plays a vital role in combustion in a gas system. When unlit, or if it goes out, you’ll lose access to your heat. Pilots are easy to relight. In fact, most modern ones have a simple relight button. If the pilot continues to go out, though, you may need to clean the pilot to clear gunk away, or you might need to call an expert if the problem persists.
- The air filter is dirty. Filters with cakes of dust and common home pollution will restrict airflow in a furnace, leading to overheating or a simple failure to deliver sufficient heat. Check your filter to be sure it’s clean, and to avoid this problem entirely in the future, be sure to change the filter monthly during seasons of high use.
When Do I Need to Call an Expert?
Put simply, if any of the above solutions didn’t do it for you, you’ll want a professional to come inspect the system. The list above represents solutions that any homeowner can do safely, but beyond those, things get more technical and dicey. You should also call for furnace repair if any of the problems are accompanied by the following:
- The furnace is leaking. Modern high-efficiency electric furnaces use two heat exchangers instead of the standard single. If an exchanger is damaged in any way, you can wind up with condensation and, of course, a loss of heating power.
- The problem is accompanied by electrical issues. If a breaker trips, light flickers, or other complications happen along with your furnace failing to heat, then you need an expert, and you need one as soon as possible. Shut down the system and call your HVAC contractor right away.
- There are loud or strange sounds. Unusual sounds indicate that a component is loose or damaged, which can lead to serious damage to the system that may require total furnace replacement. Act fast when you hear strange sounds accompanied by heat loss.
